I am also a devotee of dooce, and am now madly in love with this site. I’m glad Heather did not seem to understand technical aspects of this any more than I did.

easily the best match i’ve seen yet. humorous, fluid, and clever…it’s the continuity that i love.

I arrived from Dooce, too! What a spectacular concept! The geek in me just LOVES this. Kudos to Heather for her play-by-play (makin’ me all happy-happy with the Britney and the Run DMC/Aerosmith comments). Great job, Marian and Armin!

Layer tennis: who knew this sport existed?! Too cool…

Heather you did a great job. I imagined you sitting in your house under extreme pressure to post a comment. I also imagined that you are half way thru a bottle of gin by now. Talk about stress and pressure. Thanks for turning me onto this truly entertaining site. I am a super goober for this stuff. I can’t do it, but wish I could learn. :)

This match certainly topped my layer tennis favorite so far. Congrats to both for a well played game!

From the man himself. Thanks Coudal. I figured you had. They really could go either way; pointless or surprisingly entertaining.

Marian & Armin; Who do you think won?

iHolme. Impossible question to answer.

The politically correct version:
I have to hand it to Marian, she brought her curves and did not disappoint the crowd. Her custom typography was awesome, and she played like a champ.

The Are You Kidding Me version:
What a lousy competitor, sticking with those dumb curves, and that type? illegible. She couldn’t volley a piece of cheese even if she were using CS5.

The Seriously Considered and Critical version:
I actually think I did pretty well. Volley 2 was spot on and I felt confident. MArian’s Volley 3 threw me off, because I didn’t really get the reference until I was halfway in, and, well, seeing that lovely tennis lady just pissed me off because it was so well done. Volley 4, we’ll skip. Volley 5 from Marian, I actually thought was very odd and lackluster (no offense of course); so that’s when I felt this thing needed something else and I replied with spiros around her grid—why? why not. Marian’s Volley 7 was brutal, I loved it. My Volley 8 was a response to her ability to ornament like few other designers can; I added a new element, but carried over the curves from her Volley 7 and brought back some of the other icons, in a more infographic way, for contrast. Volley 9 didn’t rock my world… So I wasn’t sure how to reply. My call for friendship was a reminder for how close we all are, much in part thanks to events and sites like these, and how we can all spend three hours glued to a monitor discussing our stupid graphics.

Thanks to everyone for watching. And for reading all this…

Now it’s time for me to bathe my 6-month old baby.

@Joe Moran – You say beer like it would be a punishment!

To Marian and Armin, nice match. I had Marian for the win after the serve / return volley though. Armin never stood a chance. She can really push pixels around!

@Andrew: What’s your email there? I think I got something at last week’s EVP ghost hunt, and I’d like to hear what you think.
Sorry, totally off-topic.

BTW - Excellent match today!

Dear proprietors of Layer Tennis. Have you thought of doing screencasts of each competitor’s monitors? I’d find it to be quite fascinating (seeing someone’s workflow), though it would ruin the aspect of surprise for each volley. Just wondered…

It looks like Marian is the winner this week. Congratulations!

The in-forum competiton is now closed to new entries; we’ll announce who wins next week. And we’re going to hold the announcement off the front page until later, just so we don’t ruin it for people watching late.

And it’s very difficult to stay focussed. I was tempted to get distracted by Armin’s material, but just had to keep reminding myself, “No, bring it on home.”

The one thing that surprised me, both from the comments here and Heather, was the frowning of throwing in new elements, however disparate they may be.

I think it’s more the introduction of elements in such a way that they appeared plastered on top of an older layer instead of being integrated into the prior layer.

From the previous match, look at the progression from volley 5 to 6 to 7. First there’s a cloud of eyes, then there’s a face with the two eyes, then a single eye peering through a crack. It felt like the volleys were building on one another. The next volley, 8, was seen by some as breaking the continuity, and therefore the narrative.
