Topic: General Layer Tennis Discussions / Rules of Remixing? I don’t know if I missed them, but I can’t exactly find any rules or guidelines for remixes. Just to clarify, what are we allowed to do with a remix? Do we only work with the elements already there, or can we add our own elements to it? Can we wipe the slate clean and come up with our own response to a volley instead of altering the other designer’s response? Should we do our remixes in 15 minutes like the competitors (honor system on this one, I guess)? Should we do remixes during the matches, or can we go back and remix match 1 if we wanted? I think that covers what I want to know. |

Topic: Scott Hansen vs Rob Cordiner 11/9 / Conversation About The Match Aw crap, got caught up in work and missed the last two volleys… but now I gotta go home. It’s quitting time. Quick sum up on my opinion here… Volley 9 : Hansen came back again with his typical style and a new color palette, which is nice, but it’s just a different colored one trick pony. Still looks nice though, and the box being in there is cool. Volley 10: MY EYES. THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING. Nice match, but very one-sided. But it was cool to see everything Hansen did. And Cordiner’s sense of humor is great, but I would have liked to see better designs. Later all. |

Topic: Scott Hansen vs Rob Cordiner 11/9 / Conversation About The Match Volley 8… um… yeah, I’m not digging the system font there. Rather than being good for a chuckle, when it loaded up my first two thoughts were “You gotta be kidding me.” and “Um… what is this?”. I am more than a bit disappointed in this return. At this point, Hansen can upload a blank white screen for volley 9 and the match is his. For me, I like how layer tennis works. I think the rules, being as loose as they are, are great. With more structure things may make more sense, but the more structure you add the more freedom you take away, and the freedom is where the creativity comes from. These guys have structure at work, this is an extracurricular activity for them, so I doubt that they want much structure. I’m just glad these things happen on Friday. My boss is typically too drunk to care about what we’re doing at this point, sorry for the rest of you who have the over-the-shoulder bosses. |

Topic: Scott Hansen vs Rob Cordiner 11/9 / Conversation About The Match Hansen strikes again, cleaning up the old monkey, moving both onwards and backwards. I’m really loving Hansen’s style, the colors, the layers, not too busy at all, and really beautiful. Though, This is his 4th volley and all of them have the exact same styling, I think volley 9 would be a good time to show you’re not a one trick pony, Hansen. I love the typography of VERSUS. Also, using the footprint from Cordiner was a nice touch. It will be interesting to see Cordiner’s return to this. Will he take it back the simplicity of the monkey (btw, I know it’s a gorilla), or come out with something extremely weird like volley four? And I’m not sure what you people are talking about it not building on the previous volley? Volley 2 was obviously a departure from Volley 1, but 3 was based off 2 and 4 was based off 3. 5 took it into a different direction, but 2 or 3 shots all based off the previous is all you need before wiping the slate clean. In a real game of tennis, 95% of the volleys don’t last long because one person figures out they’re not in control of the volley and just lets it go, because there’s no point in fighting a losing battle. And the other person puts it away, because they don’t want to waste more time and energy than they have to winning a point. That’s what’s going on here, if you feel you’ve won the exchange, move on to get more points. If you feel you’ve lost the exchange, move on to try and win the next one. |

Topic: Scott Hansen vs Rob Cordiner 11/9 / Conversation About The Match Gah. Got pulled into a freaking 2 hour meeting and I’ve missed half the match. Back now and looking it over, I have to give the first two volleys to Hansen. The first return by Cordiner I didn’t get at all. And Hansen’s return to Cordiner’s first posting was awesome, and I’d say Cordiner came up short on his return to Hansen’s second shot. Hansen’s third shot, stereo monkey, was pretty cool, bringing back the color scheme from the serve. I actually like Cordiner’s response to this one, bringing back to the simple black and white, and the text that goes along with it. I’m not sure I’d say he won the 5/6 volley, but I think he’s getting more into the groove than he was. |
