I’ve gone through both matches several times, now. I’ve read every word. I didn’t think it possible to beat Glass, but match one is Inman’s on the strength of volley 9. Match two belongs to Rosecrans. Too close to call between the competitors, but it was the commentary that made the match. Phenomenal finale!

Going to be neutral here ( yeah right ) – I viewed the match several times between Inman and Glass. Glass for the win hands down. Volley 7 was like reminded me of volley 9 in the match between Hamid and Glass. Looks like Inman lost it regardless of his out of box shot. I have four words for you: NEXT STOP: GLASS WINS

Inman for the win. For me, Innovation Points outweigh the Rule Breaking penalty in volley 9. Inman stayed true to his theme throughout the match, while still allowing enough flexibility to respond to Glass’s volleys tastefully.

I’m declaring Shaun as winner. I love his simplicity and the clever humor and above all the direction of the theme. Chris is certainly a worthy opponent but I give Shaun the edge for being able to hold his own against a great talent with the things he is good at. But it’s a very close call.

My Votes:

Match A GLASS, for consistency, quick-thinking and craftsmanship—all in a short-time period. His animated Image 4 is my favorite of the match. It had style, character, integration with the other match and the unexpected, motion. John’s likening to R2-D2 was spot on. He also gets points for good sportsmanship for providing me with a pristine shot of said shot-dodging glass so I didn’t have to try to mask the one he had used.

Match B TIE unless you want to penalize Hutch for the delay on Volley 7, then it goes to Kox. The exchange between volleys 4 and 5 were the best in this match.

Overall GLASS, the locomotive, for volleys that were on track, on time and well-engineered.

I also want to reply to my seeming reticence to include imagery from the other match. Because Kox and Hutch were using motion, their volleys quickly fell behind, with new ones consistently going up after Chris had already incorporated their previous and I was well into my next. To maintain our pace, I decided to continue with the initial direction rather than start over each time. That and I’m a total uni-tasker. My head was spinning trying to keep up with our match, their match, the commentary on both, the forum reactions and the boisterous back-channel.

It’s 2AM and after a few swigs of Beam, I found a better version of the Lido Shuffle, from back in the day when ol’ Bosley had a little fight left in him

I might just be tipsy and overstimulated, but this recently discovered version almost approaches a Glass-Houses-era Billy Joel level of energy. And I love the sloppy studio beginning buidling up to the big concert thing going on. I take it back, Boz, you’re OK. You’re no Donnie Iris but you’ll do.

Great stuff all the way ‘round. Even though it took a bite out of my computer’s processor and it was a bit confusing at first with all the windows and links and stuff. Great commentary, too. (Was that part of the competition?)

After careful evaluation: Glass and Hutchinson. Does this lead to a double-dog-disqualification-designer-duel?

But whatever. It was fun to just see it.

Match A: Glass was more consistent, but Inman really pushed the boundaries (literally). Have to give it to Shaun on overall points and a damn well executed gameplan.
Match B: Hutch. Pooping t-rexes and PWNASAURUS video games, a win-win combo.

So I’ve had the whole commute home to ponder this awesome afternoon (a big shout out of thanks to all the magic that happens behind the scenes to make this Layer Tennis happen). I feel super lucky to have been able to participate not once, but twice.

Now for voting.

MATCH A: My vote goes for INMAN. I could pick apart my crafty but daft volleys, but I’m too tired for self-deprecation this evening. Though Shaun seemed reticent to pull from the other match, he had a vision and executed it very, very, well. The first volley reminds me of that Catcher in the Rye paperback cover. Classic. The four glasses turned upside-down? Pure goodness. Clean, timeless design. And his last volley sealed the deal, with skill that is often overlooked, and that’s behind the scenes of the bits and bytes, the CSS.

MATCH B: I’m going to go with KOXVOLD. It was the audio that pulled me over to his side. The whimsy and motion of every lob was delightful. I would never agree to that much rendering and work in a short period of time. I’ll stick with cameras and scotch tape, thankyouverymuch, but man I can appreciate it.

I won’t pick an overall winner, but I would like to pick out favorite volleys from the entire season. That’ll happen after: 1.) Beer and 2.) Sleeping in.

The sitcom ending? not bad, but it’d been better if Suzanne Pleshette woke up in bed next to the Viking. Or Minotaur, or whatever that thing is. At least it’s not the Layer Viking. I kid, I loved the Layer Viking

I dunno where to go with this, so I’m going to torture you all with a song I’ve heard three times in the last 48 hours, and I can’t explain why.

It especially sucks because when I hear the opening bass riff, I think it’s going to be Thin Lizzy and I get all excited. There are already bands I used to like that are about that exciting live, and it’s only going to get worse. Last time I saw Stereolab, Tim was wearing a linen suit.

The “I thought the commentator’s booth smelled bad on the outside” line did, in fact, occur to me, but I felt no need to assert my encyclopedic knowledge of The Empire Strikes Back by quoting a line that didn’t quite fit in context. Now tell me that you love me and I’ll smirk and say “I know”.

Winners?

Inman vs Glass: Glass wins for more consistantly referencing both his own match and the other one. Inman stuck to his concept (which was a good one by the way, using the Coudal colours in a Tufte-esque display of meaningless info), and his volley 9 would have scored big points even if it hand’t bent the rules, but 7 was a bit of a dud. And it’s just tough to compete with Glass’s lightning quick print, cut out, tape up, photograph with a wide-open aperture technique, which scored him plenty of points the last time around, and produced arguably the best single volley in the finals with his parting shot.

Hutchinson vs Kuxvold: Volleys 9 and 10, coming in late, after things had largely wound down, felt like two variations on a epilogue and not a match-closing back and forth. However, based on 1-8, Kuxvold wins for his singing. And for volley 8, which effectively closed the book on both matches in a clever and clear manner. Hutchinson went way over on time, and produced something impressive, and those skulls came back in both of my favourite volleys (I still want to believe they’re a pile of Yorick clones), but for all that effort the coloured dinos were maybe just a little too much, you know?

Gruber vs Baldwin: I might have to recuse myself, as Guildens… um I mean Rosen… ahem, Rosecrans, mentioned me in the running commentary not just once, but twice. Although both scribes did a valiant job of following their own match, plus the other match, all while still taking stabs at one another (and us the viewing public).

Overall winner? Glass by a narrow margin.
