Topic: Conversation About The Match @AlyssaT: Sorry, the side contest closes when the winner is announced; you just missed it. But your remix is still in the running for that contest. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match P.S. Heller should know better than to tarnish Coudal’s pages with a “foot mark” instead of a good ol’ opt-shift-]. Shame, shame, shame Steven! See Volley 7: I’m Not Through Yet |

Topic: Conversation About The Match Draplin all the way. He illustrated fierce wit while Nakamoto’s strikes had a lot of lackluster. Nakamoto’s techniques was also really basic. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match I’m just getting around to looking thru the match, and the comments; however, I did research both designers on Thursday to “prepare.” I just was sidewinded on Friday re participation. Heller is one of my faves, and Ed Benguiat gave me a signed copy of one of his Typeplay books for an “A” in class once. After researching Draplin, I found his arrogance unappealing, and his own self-serving tailgate a turn-off. But in the end, I’d have to agree with most of you that he did drink his can of Whup Ass and it “served” him well. Volley 8 was a very creative “written” comeback, but this isn’t a writing contest now, is it? Even though I’ve become an “Everything west of the Hudson is not New York” snob, and I’m not a cheerleader for the Midwest (except the jewels of Ann Arbor and Chicago proper), I’d have to say Draplin won by a snowdrift capable of blocking an overpass on I-94! I mean the game could have been over just with the first serve! Totally Draplin, (well written, too), and the ball could hit Nakamoto in the eye—the match then forfeited—and we’d all have been satisfied, me thinks. Partial pet pecking order†: Horse trumps dog; dog trumps cat; cat trumps fish; fish trump hamsters; hamsters trump crickets; crickets trump NYC cockroaches. †I purposely left parrots out since I’m an avid parrot parent and know that parrots trump everything, even chimps. But I’m biased to say the very least. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match Andrew, thanks! I already did one though and it’s linked above. Just wondering if it counted for the side contest or not. I thought that everyone was supposed to post them here like they’ve been doing.. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match I absolutely loved the match (only caught the first 4 volleys live). My vote also goes to Draplin, but Nakamoto had some great shots. 9 and 10 reminded me (in spirit) of the Harrington / Anderson match, what with the double entendres and mixed messages (love vs. zero, peace sign vs. ‘v for victory). Draplin and Nakamoto both seemed a bit worn out by the end, though, while Harrington and Anderson were just hitting their strides when their competition finished. But what do I know? I couldn’t design my way out of a cardboard box. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match nakamoto’s final entry was pretty damn good – but not only did he egregiously mis-score the match, i think he didn’t show the consistency of ajd. game. match. draplin. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match Awesome match, I usually wait until it’s all over and then look at them all in one go! Incidentally, I’m pretty sure that Steven Heller was joking in the first paragraph of the Preview intro as photoshop didn’t get actual layers until version 3 ;) Showing my age a bit to remember that! That would be an interesting Layer Tennis challenge, both players have to use Photoshop 2.5 so that when an element is pasted in then it’s final, no chance to move around or edit! Plus, they’d need to run it on OS9 too. Maybe an idea for a Retro Layer Tennis match? |

Topic: Conversation About The Match Dang! It’s been called already? Well, shut my mouth. I’ve been working on a side entry for three hours and still didn’t finish. Just goes to show, what masters can do in 15 minutes, some of us cant do in three hours. I did go get something to eat though. Seriously, kudos to both participants. |

Topic: Conversation About The Match For the first time, the Layer Tennis judges and the forum disagree: The judges are leaning toward Nakamoto, but the forums are overwhelmingly in Draplin’s favor. Power to the people: Draplin wins the match. |
