Thanks for the input here and for all the emails too. We’ll be announcing the two Friday matches tomorrow, it should be big fun.

For sure, I’d love to see Kevin Cornell versus anyone.

My votes:

Kevin Cornall vs. Marian Bantjes
Heather Armstrong commentating

Shaun Inman vs. Steven Harrington
Josh Allen commentating

I would love to see Shaun vs Scott Hansen. I think the style of Scott’s work complement’s Shaun’s sense of type and arrangement—the match would produce some wall-hanging worthy results.

I’d love to see Marian’s work brought to life, so perhaps a Bantjes/Hutchinson match, or even Bantjes/Owens even though it may make people nauseous :)

Commentary-wise, I thought Heather Armstrong did a nice job as well as Steven Heller with his frequent parenthesizing.

My favorite matches were:

  • Kevin Cornell vs Shaun Inman
  • Steven Harrington vs Chuck Anderson
  • Naz Hamid vs Chris Glass
  • Trevor Van Meter vs James Hutchinson

I’d like to see the the following matches

  • Cornell vs Harrington
  • Harrington vs Glass
  • Glass vs Cornell
  • Trevor vs Cornell

Some crazy ideas

  • Shaun Inman vs Cornell, with Shaun starting
  • Jason Kottke vs John Gruber (text or typo fight)
  • Gary (the dog from Aaron Draplin) vs Flat Stanley (from Naz Hamid)
  • The Beast King (from Cornell) vs the Layer Viking (from Trevor van Meter)
  • A CSS match (Jason Santa Maria vs Shaun Inman)

Just to turn things around. Why not have one match where instead of the designers, have the commentators fight each other in a debate about the best and worst of layertennis and the tactics and techniques involved. And after each round, the commentary should be illustrated.

My pick would be:

Bryan Bedell vs. Kevin Guilfoile
Play by play illustration: Trevor Van Meter

Bryan for the soundtrack, Kevin so we can hopefully find out what his biggest layertennis pet peve is, and Trevor, because such lively debate should be animated and be interesting in it self.

It must be Cornell vs. Santa Maria! I find them both the most entertaining and witty of the whole bunch, and just personally love their styles.

For commentary, it is hard to pick between John Gruber and Joshua Allen – but I think Allen would fit better into this matchup, and is also absolutely hilarious all on his own.

I’d pay money to see this! Hehe.

Ooh, i forgot my commentator rant. Rosecrans and Guilfoile were the undisputed gods in the old days, and both of them have still “got it” for sure, but another Baldwin (how many of you are there!?), Matthew, equalled them for sure this season.

But my number 1 pick for commentary is Joshua Allen. His commentary on Owens/Gnewikow was great and all, but I just want to give him as many chances as possible to equal the greatest stream of consciousness rant of all time.

And remind me, next season, we gotta get Steve Albini involved. I like his writing even more than I like his engineering even more than I like his music.

In order to make a suggestion that would include real players, and living ones at that, I feel like I would need several days, a notebook, a bunch of pencils, and a better memory than the one I currently have.

Please Sirs,

Wimbledon is always at its best when the mixed doubles are on court. Accordingly I propose a champion of champions tournament:

Bantjes & Glass v. Harrington & Cornell

I would further be most obliged if you might ask either of these witty and informed chaps to shed light on the afternoons sport?

Bryan Bedell / Joshua Allen

[ Admittedly one of these elite players might have to don a skirt (or similar appropriate feminine attire) to fulfill the rules of mixed doubles in the strictest sense. I like to think that either would be content to oblige for such a noble cause…]

After spending a deal of time looking and reading through the previous matches, I have decided that I am more confused than ever. Stick all those names in a hat and pull 4 of ‘em out. Whatever is pulled, it’s guaranteed to produce some interesting results.

Commentary? Heather B. Armstrong.

I think Jason is on to something here.
If we go with his idea, then my vote is for volley one/ match one.
I will have to weigh in on my dream match after a bit… of drinking. The decision is too hard to make entirely on my own.
I’m pretty sure I would like to see Glass and Cornell, but maybe not against each other…

It might also be cool to make a match start with a specific volley from a past match, something everyone can vote on.

@Bryan

ah, resources. makes sense. What do you think of having a “low resource” layer tennis match between noobies? As in, it wont be so “real-time.” Perhaps it will be like a chess match instead of a tennis match.. you know? Just a thought. :)

After lurking all season long, here are my two cents (CDN):

Match A: Aaron Draplin vs. Chris Glass Commentary by: Alissa Walker

Why? Both players included some great photography in their original matches (Draplin, volley7; Glass, volley2) which I think would make for a great match-up. I don’t know if Alissa’s knowledge of 80s gaming will matter here, but I enjoyed her original commentary all the same.

Match B: Scott Hansen vs. Mathew Star Thomas Commentary by: Rosecrans Baldwin

Tons and tons of layers from both contestants the first time around (Hansen, volley1; Thomas, volley10); it’d be great to see another match like that. As for the commentary, I was sold on the first line of Rosecrans’ match preview: “Designers are illiterate herd-following pansies, for the most part. It’s part of the job description to be fashionable and shallow.”

However it turns out, it’s been a great season. Thanks to everyone involved!
