Based on my four-point system that measures aesthetics, concept, integration with other volleys, and demonstration of skill we tied at 16:16. Then I applied a narcism penalty to myself and Chris pulled ahead ;)

Anyone checking in late be sure to check out my parting shot (Image 9, Match A) as it originally appeared (the archive page no longer contains the tandem navigation that was present when the image was originally designed and presented).

My Votes:

Match A GLASS, for consistency, quick-thinking and craftsmanship—all in a short-time period. His animated Image 4 is my favorite of the match. It had style, character, integration with the other match and the unexpected, motion. John’s likening to R2-D2 was spot on. He also gets points for good sportsmanship for providing me with a pristine shot of said shot-dodging glass so I didn’t have to try to mask the one he had used.

Match B TIE unless you want to penalize Hutch for the delay on Volley 7, then it goes to Kox. The exchange between volleys 4 and 5 were the best in this match.

Overall GLASS, the locomotive, for volleys that were on track, on time and well-engineered.

I also want to reply to my seeming reticence to include imagery from the other match. Because Kox and Hutch were using motion, their volleys quickly fell behind, with new ones consistently going up after Chris had already incorporated their previous and I was well into my next. To maintain our pace, I decided to continue with the initial direction rather than start over each time. That and I’m a total uni-tasker. My head was spinning trying to keep up with our match, their match, the commentary on both, the forum reactions and the boisterous back-channel.

I should add, the inforgraphics opener was inspired by a couple of Wire & Twine’s tees and all the recent hullabaloo about Tufte and the iPhone. (It’s really funny that Crans mentioned that in his match’s preview.)

Shaun, awesome job breaking out of the box. What gave you the idea to do that?

Going into this match I knew I was in for tough one. Chris is more than a desktop designer, he’s also a skilled craftsman (as was Kevin Cornell and we saw how that ended for me ;D). So last night I really started thinking about how I could play to my own strengths (and side-step my weaknesses). Devil’s in the details and all that.

I decided to play off the page’s existing grid and colors. I wanted to flirt with the available image boundaries without directly addressing them (you won’t see a well-defined edge on any of my images). (I set some additional limitations on myself in an effort to keep on track: one typeface, only use Coudal’s colors, no gradients.) As I was exploring the idea mentally I thought it would be cool to, in my parting shot, really ignore those boundaries. I emailed Jim late last night to see if it was allowable. I threw together a simple proof-of-concept image, shot it over to him with the CSS late this morning and got the go-ahead.

I figure, if you laid out the frames of the animated volleys side-by-side they’d be way wider than my volley ;)

Am I glad that’s over. Mr. Glass put up one hell of a fight. Can’t wait for to see the making-of his final shoe-box diorama. Good game Chris!

The mess isn’t so much the problem as the smell—makes me glad I’ll be spending all my time on the court.

That one was awesome. I also like the one on the overpass with all the cars. Bryan and vehicles pass in front of the names, a pedestrian behind. Must have been a bitch to mask. Backstory would be awesome.

Did a quick search on CP.com and in the forums and couldn’t find them. These short films are works of art in their own right, they shouldn’t just disappear into the ether. Where they be hidin’ at?

I bet Kevin loathes when a designer prints out the the previous volley and does something to it in meatspace (which kinda breaks down the whole layers thing). That’s an easy point that’s hard for the other designer to recover from. At least it was for me. :D

Veerle’s last volley may have tipped the match in her favor (for me). I’m a sucker for antiquated, aliased if you will, alert boxes. Especially when they set up us the bomb.

Shaun, is de-distressing something like un-antialiasing?

Sorry, I can relax that type if needed. :P

Here’s my entry (I can de-distress the type if I’ve somehow disqualified myself).

@doppelf: wolf cubs actually (as you’ll see in the label under the illustration when you guys get access to the source files on Monday).

For anyone interested in what was going through my head during the match I did a quick, play-by-play write up on my site.

Plasticmind, we can scan, work in Illustrator, whatever graphic tool gets the job done. I think we can even use Flash and export as an swf but my ActionScript chops aren’t up to the 15 minute challenge.

Kerning? With 15 minutes? To conceive, comp and create? A little slack please! ;)
